What a dirty drum does to a load
Hardened concrete on drum walls and fins changes how a load mixes in transit. Worn or buried fins fold the mix less effectively, which shows up as inconsistent slump at the site. Old material can shed into fresh loads. A drum that hauls hundreds of pounds of dead buildup also batches short, because part of the rated capacity is already spoken for.
Fins are the quality mechanism
Fins do the mixing. When buildup bridges them, the drum turns but the concrete rides instead of folding. Chipping crews restore fins to bare steel and expose damage that buildup was hiding, so you can repair a fin before it costs you a rejected load.

Every rejected or shorted load has a cost: the material, the trip, the schedule slip, and the customer conversation.
